The Future Is An Infinite Succession Of Presents – Howard Zinn

My photos of Quimper on a rainy day..

“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.

What we chose to emphasise in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places – and there are so many – where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.

And we do do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvellous victory.”

– Howard Zinn

“Every word you utter to another human being has an effect, but you don’t know it. If people begin to understand that change comes about as a result of a million tiny acts that seem totally insignificant, well then, they wouldn’t hesitate to take those tiny acts.”

– Howard Zinn

  1. This is a topic that need a lot of coffee and time to discuss. The past is needed for some things. History for a example. I do believe we need to live for today and the past to be a teacher not to repeat bad decisions. I believe the future is unknown. One different turn or decision and we are going to a new place. I enjoyed the blog today. Beautiful photos and you made me think.

    1. Thank you. Through the internet small people in society like us, have a voice and all those small voices add up to a big voice.. We can make change if we work together in our endeavours to share our thoughts and wisdoms, by doing so we change the consciousness of the world by our thoughts… I had no idea what to post with the photos, but then the quotes can to mind.. 🙂 fondly eve

  2. Regarding the blod title….Ekhart Tolle explains it beautifully I think: There is no such thing as the future or the past…only the present. The “past” is but present moments remembered by the mind. The “future” is these memories projected “forward”.

Hope to hear from you!
