Guru’s mission:

The Guru’s mission appears to be two-fold. The first and most important concern of the Guru is to awaken, elevate and transform the seeker. The second and final purpose of the Guru is paradoxically to help the disciple seeker to transcend this state of complete dependence on the Master, which dependence the Guru himself had taken such pains to foster. The final spurt of realizing his true identity with God is exclusively the Seeker’s job.

Gurur-Brahma Gurur-Vishnu

Gurur-Devo Maheshwara

Guru Saakshaat Param Brahma

Tasmui Shri Guruve Namah.



The Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara are within us. That is why I often say you are not one, but three. This is the meaning of the three words Bhur, Bhuvah, Svaha in the Gayatri Mantra. Bhur means Bhu-loka (earth). The earth is made up of matter. Therefore human body, which is also made up of matter, is called Bhu-loka. This can be referred to as materilization. Bhuvah means life force (Prana). It is this life force that makes the body move. This is vibration. Svaha means wisdom. This is radiation. The Vedas declare, ‘Prajnanam Brahma’. This Prajnana is nothing but radiation. Human being is a combination of materialization, vibration and radiation. You do not need to search God outside. Turn your vision inward, there you find God.” Sai Baba, SS, 8/99, p. 201

Meaning Of The Trinity

“The Gita declares,’ Eeshwara dwells, 0 Arjuna, in the heart region of all beings (Eeshwaras-sarva-bhootaanaam Hrid-deshe Aq’uana Tishthati). Eeshwara therefore means the Lord of the heart. He illumines the heart of every being. This means the Divine Power of Eeshwara is present in every heart. The other name given to Eeshwara is the Lord of the Heart, Atma.

It is from the heart that the mind has emerged. The mind corresponds to the Vishnu Principle. Vishnu means all-pervasive. The mind is equally all-pervasive. ‘Mano-moolam Idam Jagat’ (The mind is the basis of the cosmos). The mind pervades the entire universe. Hence, it signifies the Vishnu Principle.

Brahma is traditionally described as arising from the navel of Vishnu. It is from the mind the speech has come. ‘Vaak’ is the embodiment of Brahma. Hence, Brahma has, among other names ‘Shabda Brahmamayee’ sound (Shabda) as Brahma.

Thus, Eeshwara, Vishnu and Brahma symbolize the heart, mind and faculty of speech. The combination of all the three represents the Atma. Hence, each of the three should be revered as the One Supreme Guru in three forms. In ‘Guru Brahma’, the Brahma referred to here is not the creator. It refers to ‘Vaak’. Guru Vishnu refers to the all-pervasive mind, which is present in all beings. This is the Vishnu Principle. ‘Guru-Devo Maheshwarah’ refers to the seat of the heart. ‘Guru Saakshaat Para-Brahma Tasmaii Shri Gurve Namah.’ This means that unity of speech, mind and heart represents the Supreme Atma, which should be revered as the Guru.” Sai Baba, SS, 8/88, p. 199

Trinity Represented By Three Gunas (Qualities)

“The Sanskrit stanza which hails the Guru as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara and as Parabrahman is misinterpreted. The right approach is to consider Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara as the Guru. These three are symbolized by the three Gunas: Brahma is

Rajas, Vishnu is Satva and Shiva is Tamas. The whole cosmos is constituted by the three Gunas. The three Gunas are present in man. The Trinity is present in the form of three Gunas in every human heart.” Sai Baba, SS, 8/96, p. 201

“Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara are not entities with forms. The Trinity represents the deified expression of three qualities. The Puranas have misrepresented Brahma as a four-headed deity engaged in cosmic creation. This is not correct. In fact the Trinity represents the three Gunas (Satva, Rajas and Tamas). There are five elemental powers in nature – earth (Bhumi), water (Aapa), fire (Agni), air (Vaayu) and space (Akaasha). If you want to understand the process of creation, the order of describing the elements has to be reversed. Starting from Akaasha (space), we have in succession air, fire, water, and earth. Nature has to be understood in two ways; one, in relation to the process of creation; the other, in relation to everyday experience. Likewise, when the order of Brahma, Vishnu and Eeshwara is viewed in relation to creation, it has to be reversed. We have Eeshwara, Vishnu and Brahma in that order.” Sai Baba, SS, 8/88, p. 199

Trinity Represented By Colours

“Three colours have been ascribed to the three Gunas. It is commonly believed that Vishnu represents the Satva Guna. It is not so. The Satva Guna is really the attribute of Eeshwara (Shiva). It is not subject to Maya (delusion). In the state of Yogic sleep (Yoga Nidra), it acquires the Chit- Shakti (the power of awareness) and appears as Shuddha Atma (the Pure Absolute). Hence, Satva represents Eeshwara Principle. Its colour is white.

Rajo-guna manifests itself in likes and dislike. But this is wrong. It is a quality associated with Vishnu. Vishnu has been depicted as a deity bearing the conch, the discus, mace and lotus. Vishnu has also been described as “Alankaara-swarupa’ (one who is embellished by decorations). Vishnu also bears the name ‘Vishwambhara’ (one who protects and rules over the universe). As a ruler, he has the Rajo-guna. The colour of the Rajo-guna is red.

Then there is Brahma. The Rajo-guna has been attributed to Brahma. This is incorrect. Brahma represents Tamo-guna. Tamo-guna is associated with (Andhakaara). It is filled with ‘Mamakaara’ (the sense of possessiveness, attachment, ego) and ‘Abhimaana’ (pride). These two impulses account for creation. If there were no sense of ‘I’ and ‘Mine’, the creative process would not go on. These two are the insignia of Tamo-guna, represented by the black colour.

White, red and black are the most important colours. All colours are merging in these three. Likewise, there are people in the world, people with Satva-guna, Rajo-guna and Tamo-guna, distinguished by one or other of three colours.” Sai Baba. SS, 8/88, p. 200


Trinity Represents Pranava (AUM)

“The verse which speaks of the Guru as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara (Shiva) is quoted often. But, the One has not broken into three, one part in charge of creation, another who fosters and maintains and the third dissolves and destroys. The Pranava Mantra OM is the symbol of the One. It is composed of three sounds- A (as in far), U (as in push) and M (as in hum). Brahma is ‘A’, Vishnu ‘U’ and Shiva is ‘M’ and all three are indivisibly united in AUM. The problem this verse poses is whether Guru is God or God is Guru, the ever-present, the ever-compassionate, the witness who resides in the heart.” Sai Baba, SS, 7/85. p. 174

Residence Of Trinity

“Regard the body as a temple in which the Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara- reside. There are no separate places where Brahma, Vishnu and Eeshwara dwell like Vaikunta or Kailasha. These are delusions born of ignorance. God is inside you, outside you, around you. You have to recognise this truth and live according to it. In the name of Guru-Purnima, you perform some Pujas for some persons and waste your lives. There is only one Guru. He is God. That Guru is within you. You are seeking all over the world. Your qualities are in you in the form of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara, and can protect you, elevate you or ruin you. When you act righteously and pursue the right path, they will protect you by their divine potencies.” Sai Baba, SS, 8/88, p. 202

The rainbow is a symbol of the divine presence, the bow of God, the brilliant light display of glory around God’s throne. So the rainbows evoke a kind of deep spiritual fervor and hope for a divinely blessed life.


Details on Rainbows

The experience of seeing the colours of the rainbow, when the sun is shining and it has been raining, is one we all can share. The experience often has a magical quality to it as though it is stirring some deep inner response. Such is the wonder of the light that forms the colours of the rainbow.

Emmanuel Swedenborg, one of the greatest spiritual pioneers of the western world, readily recognised the universal importance of light. To use his term, it corresponds to the inner awakening of enlightenment caused by the shining light inherent in truth and wisdom dispelling the darkness of doubt and despair.

Most of the colours that you and I see are produced by part of the sun’s light energy being absorbed/smothered by the objects around us. The red chair, say, gives far less light energy than it receives, whereas the heavenly principle is to GIVE AS WE RECEIVE. To consider light and colour from a spiritual viewpoint we should look at colour by transmitted light. These colours are, of course, the colours of the rainbow, when no light is lost but its inner beauties are quite literally opened out before our eyes as it shines through the transparent water droplets in the rain cloud. We are not intended to absorb the light … enlightenment, joy and happiness … rather we are intended to transmit it; and in doing so to unfold its meaning for others, and for ourselves too.

 The colours of the rainbow are not just wonderful images in our natural world but also convey deep spiritual meaning.

Isaac Newton, discovered how to produce the colours of the rainbow using a glass prism and a slit of light. Schoolchildren the world over still sense his joy of discovery in repeating this experiment for themselves. The mystical importance of the rainbow is intuitively perceived by almost everyone. It brings out the childlikeness in us … the ‘look what I’ve found’ spontaneous desire to share. It inspires a sense of joy and optimism, linked to another childlike quality – wonder.

The Story

Guru Poornima – 20th July 1997


This is an incident which took place in a Sai centre in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. Sai Sadan celebrated the Guru Pournami festival in a grand manner in the evening of 20th July ‘97. In order to imbue the occasion with greater spiritual vibrations, the Sri Sathya Sai Sathyanarayana Vrata katha parayana, i.e., the reading of our beloved Lord Sai’s life story, was conducted, in addition to the normal bhajans. The “parayana” and bhajan went on, with more than the usual fervour by the devotees.

When nearing the conclusion of the bhajan (at about 8.50 p.m.) the Centre Chairman, Mr. Rai, looked around casually behind him at the congregation, in order to decide on who should have the privilege of taking the Mangala Aarathi on this auspicious occasion. He was gladdened to see Mr. Gul Gandhi sitting right at the back, in line with the aisle, leaning on the rear wall. Mr. Gandhi is easily recognizable, not only by his big frame, but also for his big heart and great humility, being an inspiration to many a Sai devotee in Muscat. Rai felt that he should take the Aarathi that day. However, within a few seconds he received a hand written note from his wife, requesting that she would like to have the honour. Mr. Rai then remembered that the next day was her birthday and he did not have the heart to refuse her this request. He mentally apologised to Swami and to Mr. Gandhi for having to change his mind and let the lady perform the Aarathi. Subsequently, before conclusion of the prayers he went to the kitchen to check on the Prasad, and again passed Mr. Gandhi sitting at the rear.

The prayers were concluded, devotees (who numbered about 80 when only about 35 – 40 were expected to attend) had their prasad (lovingly prepared and served by the Shakti Wing ladies) and dispersed by around 10.00 p.m.

Rai was about to retire for the night, when around 10.30 the doorbell rang and whom does he find but Mr. Gandhi at the doorstep, who wanted to know where the Guru Pournami festivities had taken place that evening! Rai swallowed his surprise and named the other center (about 15 k.m. away in Ruwi) where also the prayers were held, assuming Mr. Gandhi was asking for this information. Mr. Gandhi again asked him, “Where was it held in this area, was it in the Ghala center?”. Rai replied that it was very much here and invited him in. To further confound Rai, Mr. Gandhi then asked him if he could have vibhuti prasad. This, of course, puzzled Rai, since he had seen Mr. Gandhi at the prayer. He asked him to go ahead and take it from the altar whilst asking him whether he had not taken it earlier during the prayer. Rai was absolutely stunned when Mr. Gandhi apologized to him saying that he was on the evening shift at the airport and was unable to leave till around 9.45 pm, though he had made prior arrangements with a colleague in order to be able to leave early enough to attend the bhajan. He said he had reached home a few minutes earlier, but he felt (heard) Swami urging him to go to the bhajan centre (even though it was quite late) and partake the prasad there.

Meanwhile, Rai’s elderly mother, who does not follow English, had very kindly placed whatever prasad that was left in a plate and offered it to Mr. Gandhi who was reluctant to impose on them at that late hour. However, Rai convinced him that this prasad seemed to have been meant for him as nobody else would have it earlier. When Rai explained the details to Mr. Gandhi and even showed him the spot where he saw him sitting during the prayers, all that Mr. Gandhi could do after partaking the food, was to go straight to the altar and prostrate in front of Swami’s portrait. Meanwhile, Rai noticed that Mr. Gandhi was in his official clothes (Aviation Staff uniform) whereas he had seen him in white clothes earlier.

The next day in office, Rai was finding it hard to keep his mind on the job. He was convinced that he had seen Mr. Gandhi during the bhajans, but nobody else, including his wife, mother and other devotees he spoke to had seen him there. (This was also reconfirmed with at least 10 persons who had been present) While he was wracking his brains on this, his close friend and colleague Sanil, who had also been at the bhajan, dropped in. Rai asked him whether he had seen Mr. Gandhi at the prayer. To his astonishment and great relief, Sanil confirmed it, including the same spot where Rai had seen Mr. Gandhi sitting. He also added that he not only saw Mr. Gandhi but also spoke to him and shook his hands, before they left the prayer hall together. He did not remember seeing him after that instance.

Was it Mr. Gandhi or was it Lord Sai in his form who attended the prayers?

No one, who knows him, can ever doubt the integrity of Mr. Gandhi, or of Mr. Rai and Mr. Sanil. Furthermore, it was confirmed with the Duty Officer of Oman Aviation, Mr. Purushottam Rao, that Mr. Gandhi had indeed left his workplace that evening around 9.45 p.m.

It was none other than our Beloved Lord Sai, who blessed and graced the Sai center’s devotees with his Divine Presence, though invisible to all except the two blessed gentlemen and also in the form of another “blessed” devotee.

Why did he choose that form?

Nobody except Swami Himself can answer that question. We can only say, ‘it was one more of His leelas’.
