The ecstatic poems of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, a Persian poet and Sufi master born 807 years ago in 1207, have sold millions of copies in recent years, making him the most popular poet in the US. Globally, his fans are legion.

“He’s this compelling figure in all cultures,” says Brad Gooch, who is writing a biography of Rumi to follow his critically acclaimed books on Frank O’Hara and Flannery O’Connor. “The map of Rumi’s life covers 2,500 miles,” says Gooch, who has traveled from Rumi’s birthplace in Vakhsh, a small village in what is now Tajikistan, to Samarkand in Uzbekistan, to Iran and to Syria, where Rumi studied at Damascus and Aleppo in his twenties. His final stop was Konya, in Turkey, where Rumi spent the last 50 years of his life. Today Rumi’s tomb draws reverent followers and heads of state each year for a whirling dervish ceremony on 17 December, the anniversary of his death.

The transformative moment in Rumi’s life came in 1244, when he met a wandering mystic known as Shams of Tabriz. “Rumi was 37, a traditional Muslim preacher and scholar, as his father and grandfather had been,” says Gooch. “The two of them have this electric friendship for three years – lover and beloved [or] disciple and sheikh, it’s never clear.” Rumi became a mystic. After three years Shams disappeared – “possibly murdered by a jealous son of Rumi, possibly teaching Rumi an important lesson in separation.”  Rumi coped by writing poetry. “Most of the poetry we have comes from age 37 to 67. He wrote 3,000 [love songs] to Shams, the prophet Muhammad and God. He wrote 2,000 rubayat, four-line quatrains. He wrote in couplets a six-volume spiritual epic, The Masnavi.”

During these years, Rumi incorporated poetry, music and dance into religious practice. “Rumi would whirl while he was meditating and while composing poetry, which he dictated,” said Gooch. “That was codified after his death into elegant meditative dance.” Or, as Rumi wrote, in Ghazal 2,351: “I used to recite prayers. Now I recite rhymes and poems and songs.” Centuries after his death, Rumi’s work is recited, chanted, set to music and used as inspiration for novels, poems, music, films, YouTube videos and tweets (Gooch tweets his translations @RumiSecrets). Why does Rumi’s work endure?

“He’s a poet of joy and of love,” says Gooch. “His work comes out of dealing with the separation from Shams and from love and the source of creation, and out of facing death. Rumi’s message cuts through and communicates. I saw a bumper sticker once, with a line from Rumi: “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”

“Rumi is a very mysterious and provocative poet and figure for our time, as we grapple with understanding the Sufi tradition [and] understanding the nature of ecstasy and devotion and the power of poetry,” says the poet Anne Waldman, co-founder with Allen Ginsberg of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, where she is a professor of poetics. “And the homoerotic tradition as well, consummated or not. He is in a long tradition of ecstatic seers from Sappho to Walt Whitman.”

Sacred Substance – Reincarnation/Spirituality

The Sense of the Sacred and the Feminine Body,

excerpt from a talk given by Angela Fischer at the event “The Feminine and the Earth”, July 2014.

What is little known, or has been almost forgotten, is that our bodies are sacred and that the body of a woman is sacred in a very particular way.

And if you realize how much and for what a long time the feminine has been violated, and how the feminine body has been treated and regarded, it becomes all too clear how vast the consequences to the spiritual and to the inner light altogether are.

We are used to see this from the perspective of women, and this is of course true: women have been hurt and violated. But widening your view and looking at it from the perspective of the light, of the sacred in the world, of the divine, we see the tremendous violation and denial of the divine, which occurs when you suppress it that much in relation to women.

Why is the body of a woman sacred in a particular way?

Because she has the possibility and the capability to bring the light of a soul into the world.

There is an expression… people say, they “make children”. I don’t like this expression, because women don’t “make” the children, men don’t make them either, neither are they made by both of them together.

What we do is, we make ourselves available and we guide them into the world. We do not make them. And a woman is created in such a way that she can be very close to this and can contribute a substance of her body and of herself, also of the inner substance, not only the physical one, so that the light of a soul can manifest and take on a physical body.

This means, at first she receives the soul. This is the beginning.

There is a tradition that says that in the beginning the soul that is coming into the world is sitting on a woman’s shoulder, before the child matures in the womb. And the woman is created like this – she receives. Like an antenna that receives. She is able to receive a soul. Of course, sometimes a woman and a man receive a soul together, but it is the shoulder of a woman where she is landing.

And secondly the woman prepares a space for this.

She opens a space so that the soul can come closer and find the conditions to manifest within this space.

And the third aspect is that a substance in women – a sacred substance that is living in the cells of her body and in her spiritual centres – participates in the process of light taking on form. Without this substance it is not possible.


How Souls Choose Their Parents and Families

Years before my baby girl was born, I had a dream that I had a daughter. She came to me and gave me a hug, told me I was her mother, and told me her name was Evelyn.

That dream imprinted on my memory and my heart. So much so that when I found out I was pregnant, I knew I was carrying a girl, and she had already told me her name: Evelyn. Meaning wished for child, which couldn’t be more true!

In order to evolve, our souls come to Earth more than once.  I know that as I’ve grown and changed and learned about soul contracts and reincarnation, my thoughts and beliefs have gravitated to this notion.  For those of you who are on the fence about reincarnation, I invite to you to explore the idea that a soul is born into a (different) body for many lifetimes.

It is my belief that once a soul has made the decision to have (another) earthly incarnation, the first step is to decide on what kind of life they want. This is contingent upon what lessons they wish to learn. This involves being matched with a parent or set of parents. This process really depends on the soul’s purpose and desire for specific lessons and lifestyle.

For example,  if two souls had been together before, perhaps as a mother and daughter set, then they might wish to relive that experience again or perhaps relive it in reverse, so the daughter becomes the mother in the new lifetime. Sometimes, the soul wishes to incarnate in a particular part of the world, and the choice will be less specific to the individual parent.

As diverse as people are, so are our souls and what we wish to create and experience in our lifetime(s).

It’s Only One! – Love And Friendship

“A soulmate is an ongoing connection with another individual that the soul picks up again in various times and places over lifetimes. We are attracted to another person at a soul level not because that person is our unique complement, but because by being with that individual, we are somehow provided with an impetus to become whole ourselves.” ~ Edgar Cayce

I would love to add something of my own to the above quotation but I cannot think of anything appropriate. I will leave you to read the rest of the post, and ponder on “the whys and wherefores.” Eve

Question: The problem seems to be that when you are in a relationship, in the beginning everything is happening, but when you marry that person it changes. I’ve been in several relationships, major relationships, I’ve been married and divorced twice and I’m searching for something special. Something I’m told is called a “soul mate”. Do you believe in such a relationship or person and what would that mean? How would I know that?

Ram Dass:
Got it! Keep looking! I’ll give you the farthest out answer first of all and then we’ll come back to something that everybody can handle. In the farthest out answer, we have all been around so many times that every one of us has been everything with everybody else. So when I look at you, you and I have been in so many relationships together. It’s just that we don’t remember them. Do you know how many times we have been born and died? Remember Buddha’s story: If you take a mountain six miles long and six miles wide and six miles high, that’s the distance a bullock walks in a day. And a bird flies over the mountain once every hundred years with a silk scarf in its beak and brushes the tip of the mountain. In the length of time it takes the scarf to wear away the mountain, that’s how long you have been doing this. Just think about that. Once every hundred years the scarf goes over; a scarf and a mountain. It goes on and on and on. In India there are Yugas and Kalpas of hundreds of thousands of years and then they start the cycles all over again. And we’ve been through all of them again and again.Now, behind all of this is the One. And that is all there is. All of us here are one in drag, appearing to be many. So we are all “soul mate”. There is only one of it. It’s not mates, because it’s not even two. It’s only one. There’s only one of us. So what you’re really doing is constantly marrying yourself at the deepest level of God marrying God. Now you come down into soul. And each soul has a unique karmic predicament (you could call it a psychic DNA code) that in a way guides which way its life will go. And it is entirely possible that souls when they take birth into parents that are part of their Karma will at some point meet a being and they have agreed in advance to come down and do this together and meet. And that’s what we usually call soul mates.What you have found from your past marriages is that what you are attracted to in a person isn’t what you ultimately live with. After the honeymoon is over — it’s after the desire systems that were dormant in the relationship that have the attraction in it pass and all of it passes — then you are left with the work to do. And it’s the same work. When you trade in one partner for another, you still have the same work.

Sri Krishna As Godhead – Spirituality

It is interesting to read the notes of Sri Aurobindo, about  how he expresses  devotion to Sri Krishna. Imagine a man who had little liking for religion, then somehow  his intuition tells him  that one day he would be in the consciousness of Krishna. (See slide-show at the bottom of the post.)

 

Asked by a disciple as to why he choose Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo replied: “I could not question. It was Sri Krishna’s Adesh. I had to obey. Later on I found it was for the Ashram and or the work.” (Evening talks with Sri Aurobindo pg 23)

In 1908 when arrested and sent to prison, Sri Aurobindo was shaken in faith and it was the voice from within that assured him. In the famous Uttarpara speech Sri Aurobindo says:”When I was arrested and hurried to the Lal Bazar hajat I was shaken in faith for a while, for I could not look into the heart of His intention. Therefore I faltered for a moment and cried out in my heart to Him,

 


Sri Krishna Janmashtami

Janmashtami (also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami) is a festival dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna to commemorate his birth on earth. This year it falls on August 17, and on this day (up to midnight), the whole story of Sri Krishna’s birth will be enacted by the devotees in their houses and many delicacies, prepared out of milk and curd, will be distributed as ‘prasad’ (food made sacred by offering to God) to everyone.

In his letters to sadhaks, Sri Aurobindo mentions about Sri Krishna:

“Krishna as a godhead is the Lord of Ananda, Love and Bhakti; as an incarnation, he manifests the union of wisdom (Jnana) and works and leads the earth-evolution through this towards union with the Divine by Ananda, Love and Bhakti.”

“The boy with the flute is Sri Krishna, the Lord descended into the world-play from the divine Ananda; his flute is the music of the call which seeks to transform the lower ignorant play of mortal life and bring into it and establish in its place the Lila of his divine Ananda.”

Julie Redstone said , “It is part of embodied life to focus on the level of the mind and on the level of the emotions as a way of identifying the self. Such identification has come about over a very long period of time and its presence signals the ascendance of the ego-self within time and space and the relative diminishing of the conscious awareness of one’s inner being — one’s transcendent, immortal, soul-self. That this shift took place is not a mistake. It is not an error in judgment. It is the consequence of souls being drawn into the sphere of duality which the physical realm represented, and it was by choice that souls arrived there.



THE HUMAN SOUL: A SUFI WAY

“It is the Soul, the feminine principle between Body and Spirit, which undertakes the Quest and is transformed from its physical and sensible function to its psychic function and thence to its spiritual function. As the Soul approaches the second transformation, from sensible to spiritual, it becomes what the Sufi calls the spiritual Heart, the instrument of intuition. It is the Heart which finally unites with the Spirit. It is annihilated and experiences a spiritual death. It is then reborn with the Spirit and attains subsistence: it knows that it exists through the Absolute and was never really separated from it.

 

The Soul has its origin in the spiritual world. When it is attached to the Body, it descends from the world of Light to this world of darkness, dark because of its distance from the Source. If the Body with its desires proves the stronger, the soul becomes heavier, more materially orientated, dense and opaque. The veils multiply. If, however, this Soul becomes aware of its captivity and conscious of its imprisonment within the six directions of the body and the four primary elements of earth, air, water and fire, then and only then can the journey of the feminine principle begin.

Having fallen into the world against its will, it finds itself a stranger, an exile from the world of Light. The Soul must raise itself to the level where it feels its chains and bonds are intolerable, and then, with the aid of its spiritual faculties, which only now realise the bondage, free itself and return whence it came. Thus, the moment of consciousness is awareness of the exile, the moment when the Soul realises the illusion of this life and yearns to return to its Origin where it was one with the light of Unity. Only then does the Mystic’s Soul discover where it is, where it came from and where it is to go.

 

The human form contains the possibility of uniting the opposites within by means of Consciousness. The Soul, the feminine principle of the reflective moon within, is united with the Spirit or Intellect, the masculine principle of the sun within. Then the ‘desire’, which sought knowledge, becomes known. Then one has realised the Tradition of the Prophet, ‘One who knows Self, knows Lord.’ The Way of Sufism is to become aware of the possibilities which exist within the human form, to conceive them, and then through special practises to actualize them. Ibn Arabi says: ‘Remove from your thought the exterior of words; seek the interior until you understand.’

The Soul consists of a threefold hierarchial structure: sensory, psychic and spiritual. The Soul in its sensory and psychic form is the Soul existent with the human form. We can, through structural analogy, relate the human form or microcosm to the circle, where the circumference is the physical, the radii are the sensory-psychic area, and the centre is the spiritual. The space between the centre and the circumference is the place to which the Soul descends at conception.

 

Having come from the non-physical world, it must first of all become less subtle and more concrete. In this process, it becomes the Vegetative Soul, allowing the form within the womb to have the same function of feeding and growth that plants have: the ability to transform foreign substances into its own form.

As the form grows in the womb, it develops the Animal Soul, in which it acquires the ability of motion. At birth, the Animal Soul is completed, as the form exhibits various desires. However, not until adolescence does the soul pass from the potential Consciousness to being able to actualize Consciousness with the appearance of the Rational Soul. The Quest may begin now. The ability to transform Self has come into existence.

 

The first stage of the journey is to retrace one’s steps, to return to one’s Primordial Nature, to become a form without desires. That is, one actively denies self-desires, and exists with the faculties of feeding, growth, motion and the ability to transform foreign substances into one’s own form. It is a return to complete potentiality before any masks were assumed. To be awakened is to cross the bridge to one’s Primordial Nature and then enter through the gateway.”

John Keats tells us in “Selected Letters, ~  Call the world, if you please, “the vale of Soul-making.” Then you will find out the use of the world…There may be intelligences or sparks of the divinity in millions– but they are not Souls till they acquire identities, till each one is personally itself. Intelligences are atoms of perception – they know and they see and they are pure, in short they are God. How then are Souls to be made?… How but by the medium of a world like this?… Do you not see how necessary a World of Pains and troubles is to school an Intelligence and make it a soul? Once there came to the court of the Prince of Birkasha a dancer with her musicians. And she was admitted to the court, and she danced before the prince to the music the lute and the flute and the zither.

She danced the dance of flames, and the dance of swords and spears; she danced the dance of stars and the dance of space. And then she danced the dance of flowers in the wind.

After this she stood before the throne of the prince and bowed her body before him. And the prince bade her to come nearer, and he said unto her, “Beautiful woman, daughter of grace and delight, whence comes your art? And how is it that you command all the elements in your rhythms and your rhymes?”

And the dancer bowed again before the prince, and she answered, “Mighty and gracious Majesty, I know not the answer to your questionings. When speaking of Mechthild Of Mechthild, we struggle in vain to compose any image at all. She was only “Mechthild” not “Saint Mechthild” or even “Blessed Mechthild”, and she had no official biographer. We know almost nothing about her except what she tells us in her own book, and that is only enough to let us sketch the roughest outlines of her life. Here are just a few more poems from this delightful soul. She is speaking again of the ‘Lord of the Dance’ who resides in her own soul. This will be my last post on the topic of Christian Mysticism for now.
